Bdelugma tēs erēmōseōs (βδέλυγμα τῆς ἐρημώσεως) quotes the Hebrew shiqquts meshomem (שִׁקּוּץ מְשׁוֹמֵם) from Daniel 9:27; 11:31; 12:11 — an idol or profane object so revolting it renders the holy place desolate. F.O.G renders "appalling abomination" to capture the visceral horror of bdelugma (stench, revulsion); F.O.G Message retains the traditional rendering for intertextual recognition. The parenthetical call to understand is almost certainly a directive to read Daniel carefully.
