ἐπιγαμβρεύσει refers to the levirate marriage law (Deuteronomy 25:5–6), from the Latin levir (brother-in-law) and the Hebrew יִבֵּם (yibbem). The law's purpose was to preserve the dead man's name, inheritance, and tribal continuity—a profoundly this-worldly institution, which makes the Sadducees' use of it as a reductio ad absurdum against resurrection all the more pointed.
