He works from a personal encounter with Jesus first, then draws on the scholarship of respected Jewish and Christian scholars — because the church was Jewish before it was anything else, and those roots change everything about how you read Scripture.

Footnotes

λῃστῶν (lēstōn) = bandits, brigands — specifically violent, armed criminals, not petty traders. The same word describes Barabbas and the men crucified alongside Yeshua/Jesus. The quotation is from Jeremiah 7:11, where the prophet condemns Israel for using the Temple as a refuge — retreating to YHWH's/God's house between acts of wickedness as though it grants immunity. The indictment targets not mere commercialism but the wholesale corruption of Israel's covenant identity. FOG uses "hideout for bandits" to keep the revolutionary undertone alive; FOG Message retains the traditional "den of robbers."
