ἱερόν (hieron) = the broader Temple complex, including the outer courts, distinct from the inner sanctuary (ναός, naos). The commercial activity was concentrated in the Court of the Gentiles — the outermost court designed for non-Israelites to approach YHWH/God. This context makes the quotation that follows (Isaiah 56:7, "a house of prayer for all nations") all the more pointed: the one space left for Gentile prayer had been converted into a marketplace.
