Cited from Jeremiah 31:15. Ramah, north of Jerusalem, was the assembly point where Babylonian captors gathered Jewish exiles before deportation (Jeremiah 40:1) — a place already saturated with the grief of forced separation. Rachel, buried near Bethlehem, stands as the tribal mother of Israel, her weeping encompassing all of God's children lost to violence and empire. Crucially, Matthew's citation stops before Jeremiah 31:16–17, which immediately follows with a divine promise of homecoming and restoration — the trajectory of hope is real but unspoken, available to any reader who knows the text. The grief is not the last word.
