(Some background is needed here: the Pharisees, and Jewish people who follow the tradition of the elders, never eat without a ceremonial washing of their hands —
(For the P'rushim and all Yehudim do not eat without first washing their hands with care, upholding the tradition of the elders —
For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders.
Now in holding to the tradition of the elders, the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat until they wash their hands ceremonially.
