The Greek pugme literally means "with the fist," and its precise referent is genuinely contested: it may mean washing "up to the wrist," "with a fistful of water," or simply "carefully and thoroughly." Crucially, this practice has no Mosaic Torah mandate — it is a fence-law tradition of the elders. F.O.G. renders "with care" to capture the thoroughness implied; F.O.G. Message uses "ceremonial washing" to foreground its religious rather than hygienic character.
