κατακόπτων — "cutting/hacking" — a violent, repeated word. Slashing oneself with stones was associated with mourning rituals in the ancient Near East (cf. 1 Kgs 18:28). Mark paints a man trapped in perpetual death-rites among the actual dead — humanity at its most desolate.
