Verses 9–20 constitute the "Longer Ending" of Mark, absent from Codex Sinaiticus and Codex Vaticanus — the two oldest and most reliable Greek manuscripts — as well as early Syriac and Coptic traditions; Eusebius and Jerome both noted its absence in their day. The vocabulary and style also differ markedly from 1:1–16:8. Both versions place this section in brackets to signal its secondary textual status. It is preserved as canonical tradition received by the church — ancient and weighty in its content — but distinguished from the earliest stratum of Mark's text.
