The Greek ἐξεθαμβήθησαν is Mark's intensified form of ἐκθαμβέω, used only by Mark in the NT (cf. 9:15; 14:33), conveying a shock that is almost prostrating — far beyond ordinary surprise. The F.O.G renders "utterly overwhelmed" and the F.O.G Message "overcome with alarm" to capture this intensity. The νεανίσκον (young man) is deliberately ambiguous — the same word used for the fleeing figure of 14:51, but here seated, white-robed, and calm; Mark's first-century readers would have recognised the angelic register without needing to be told.
