οὐδὲ ὁ υἱός ("not even the Son") is the most theologically striking statement in the chapter. The Son's genuine unknowing of the hour reflects a voluntary limitation taken on within the Incarnation — what Paul calls κένωσις ("self-emptying," Philippians 2:7). The verse was sufficiently uncomfortable that some later copyists omitted it (absent from a handful of manuscripts). Both versions retain it as the harder and better-attested reading. The knowledge withheld from the Son is precisely what makes the call to watchfulness urgent: if even the Son did not know, no human calculation can substitute for constant readiness.
