The fig tree (συκή) in Hebrew prophecy frequently symbolises Israel in its condition before YHWH (Hosea 9:10; Jeremiah 24; Joel 1:7; Micah 7:1). That Yeshua/Jesus has just cursed a fig tree and watched it wither (Mark 11:12–14, 20–21) gives this parable a charged intertextual edge — both as a warning about fruitlessness and as a sign about the harvest-judgement to come. Whether the parable is primarily a general observation about readable signs or a coded statement about Israel's fate is an ambiguity the text deliberately holds open.
