Footnotes
βάπτισμα (baptisma) — the rite of total water immersion (טְבִילָה, tevilah in Hebrew), well-established in Second Temple Judaism as a purification practice at Qumran, at the mikveh, and for Gentile proselytes entering the covenant. F.O.G renders "immersion" to recover the physical and ritual specificity of the act; F.O.G Message uses "baptism," the traditional term that has accumulated its own covenantal and sacramental weight in Christian usage. ἐξ οὐρανοῦ (ex ouranou) follows the same pattern: F.O.G renders "from the skies" for consistency with its treatment of the visible cosmic realm; F.O.G Message uses "from heaven" as the theologically resonant alternative.
