διηπόρει (diēporei) means to be completely at a loss, thoroughly bewildered — stronger than mere confusion. It connotes the helpless disorientation of someone who cannot make sense of the evidence before him. FOG renders it "at a loss"; FOG Message opts for "perplexed" — both attempt to honour the word's intensity.
