This is the most exegetically contested verse in the passage. The Greek hoti ēgapēsen poly ("because she loved greatly") can be read causally (love produces forgiveness) or evidentially (love demonstrates prior forgiveness). Luke's own parable in vv.41–42 establishes that the one forgiven more loves more—forgiveness precedes and generates love. FOG renders hoti as a simple resultative ("for"); FOG Message makes the evidential logic explicit ("proof of it"). The theological weight of the entire passage falls on grace preceding love.
