The Greek ψυχήν (psychēn) corresponds to the Hebrew נֶפֶשׁ (nephesh), which cannot be adequately rendered by the English "soul." Nephesh denotes the whole animated self — life, breath, appetite, the person as a living being. F.O.G retains "nephesh" to preserve this Hebraic wholeness; F.O.G Message uses "life" for immediate clarity. Both resist the later Greek-influenced reading in which "soul" suggests a disembodied spiritual component separable from the body — the question Jesus poses concerns the value of a whole human being.
