The name Ἰσκαριώθ (Iskariōth) is most likely derived from the Hebrew אִישׁ קְרִיּוֹת (ish-K'riot) — "a man from Kerioth," a town in Judea (cf. Josh 15:25), which would make Judas the only non-Galilean among the Twelve. A minority view derives the name from the Latin sicarius ("dagger-man"), a term for Jewish assassins of the period, casting "Iscariot" as a post-resurrection polemical nickname. F.O.G renders K'riot to preserve the geographical identification; F.O.G Message retains the familiar "Iscariot."
