Footnotes
This verse is unique to Luke and theologically rich. Read as wry observation rather than endorsement, it explains why those steeped in old covenant structures resist the new: not from malice but from genuine satisfaction with the familiar. The Greek chrēstos (χρηστός) means "good," "pleasant," or "fine" — the FOG renders it "good enough," suggesting adequacy rather than superiority; the FOG Message renders it "better," capturing the comparative pride of those who prefer what they have always known. Strikingly, chrēstos was pronounced identically to Christos (Χριστός, Messiah/Christ) in Koine Greek — a wordplay Luke's educated audience may well have heard: those satisfied with the old cannot taste the One who is new.
