ἤδη (ēdē) — 'already / even now' — inserts urgent present tense: the axe is not approaching; it is already positioned. The image of an axe at the root (not at the branches) signals total, irreversible removal rather than remedial pruning. Judgment is already underway; the only question is whether the tree bears fruit before the blow falls.
