paroikeis ('to dwell as a resident alien, a sojourner passing through') is theologically electric here; Cleopas uses it as a mild rhetorical taunt, but Luke's irony is exquisite: Yeshua/Jesus is in fact the ultimate paroikos — the Word who pitched His tent among us (John 1:14), Who came to His own and was not received, the stranger Who reveals Himself as the Host. The same word describes Israel as sojourners in the LXX and believers as 'aliens and sojourners' in 1 Peter 2:11.
