“Γῆ” (gē) = land or earth—genuinely ambiguous. F.O.G renders “land” as contextually grounded to the region of Yisra’el; F.O.G Message renders “earth” to draw out the cosmic, eschatological register. The darkness evokes the ninth plague on Mitzrayim (Exodus 10:21–23) and Amos 8:9: “I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth in broad daylight.” The sixth hour to the ninth hour (noon to 3 pm) also coincides with the time of the afternoon Tamid sacrifice in the Temple.
