The Greek lēstēs (λῃστής) ranges from common robber to violent revolutionary or insurrectionist—the same word used to describe the two men crucified alongside Jesus (Mark 15:27) and Barabbas (John 18:40). Jesus is noting the bitter irony: He who taught openly in the Temple daily is being arrested by night with the tactics reserved for armed rebels. The FOG uses "bandit" (leaning toward brigandage); the FM uses "robber" (leaning toward common criminality), though neither fully captures the political-revolutionary overtone the word could carry.
