The phrase πρὸς ἑαυτὸν is syntactically ambiguous: it can mean "to himself" (his prayer was addressed to himself, not to God—a cutting irony) or "by himself" (he stood apart, as Pharisees would, to pray in separated dignity). The FOG takes the more pointed reading—"prayed these things to himself"—making the Pharisee's self-referential address the devastating punchline. The FOG Message renders "prayed about himself," preserving the self-congratulatory content without fully foreclosing the question of who is being addressed.
