metanoēsousin (μετανοήσουσιν) = "they will repent/change direction" — the rich man's logic assumes that a miraculous sign would accomplish what the written Word has failed to do; the parable's response devastates that assumption and, in doing so, anticipates both the raising of the historical El'azar in John 11 and the resurrection of Jesus Himself.
