The σταυρόν (cross/execution stake) would have evoked for a first-century Jewish audience not a devotional symbol but the concrete image of a condemned man carrying his own instrument of execution through the streets — a common sight under Roman occupation. This was lived reality, not metaphor. The FOG uses "talmid" (תַּלְמִיד), the Aramaic-Hebrew word for a student who follows a rabbi so closely that every pattern of the teacher's life becomes the student's own; the FOG Message uses "disciple" for broad accessibility. To be a talmid implied not merely intellectual learning but total life-pattern apprenticeship — in this context, apprenticeship in the way of death itself.
