ἀναίδειαν (anaideia) is the crux of this parable. Traditionally rendered "shamelessness" or "importunity," it is applied to the petitioner's bold, persistent knocking — the notion being that his brazen refusal to give up eventually wins the bread. However, in the honour-shame culture of first-century Palestine, the word may instead point to the householder's concern for his own reputation: he rises not because he is worn down, but to avoid the shame of being known as an inhospitable neighbour (the midnight request is audible to the village). Kenneth Bailey and others argue this reading better fits the parable's logic and cultural setting. F.O.G follows the traditional "shameless persistence" of the petitioner; F.O.G Message renders it through the honour-shame lens — the householder acts to guard his own honour.
