ἁπλοῦς (haplous) and πονηρός (poneros) are the contrasting adjectives. ἁπλοῦς literally means "single/undivided" and also carries the sense of "generous" in Jewish wisdom literature (Sir 32:8; Prov 11:25 LXX) — it describes an eye, and a heart, focused wholly on one thing: God. πονηρός means both "evil/wicked" and "diseased/defective" (as in medical usage for a bad or failing eye). The wordplay is intentional: moral dividedness produces spiritual blindness just as a diseased eye produces physical darkness. F.O.G renders the pair "clear/diseased" to foreground the physical and the spiritual simultaneously; F.O.G Message uses "healthy/unhealthy," which is more natural in English while still evoking both the physical sight and the moral resonance.
