Iereus is the Greek for "priest," but in its Jewish context this was a cohen — a hereditary office of Aaron's line responsible for the sacrificial service. The division of Aviyah (Abijah) was eighth of the twenty-four priestly divisions established by David (1 Chr 24:10), each serving one week twice a year. Luke grounds the narrative in the full architecture of the Levitical order from the very first scene.
