chattat (חַטָּאת): Traditionally rendered "sin offering," but the word's primary ritual function in Leviticus is purificatory — its blood cleanses sacred objects from contamination (as v.15 makes explicit) rather than addressing moral guilt directly. F.O.G follows the scholarly consensus associated with Milgrom, preferring "purification offering"; F.O.G Message retains "sin offering" for its covenantal and NT-resonant weight, since the same term underlies the NT's atonement theology.
