וַיִּקֹּב (vayyiqov) comes from נָקַב (naqav), meaning "to pierce/bore through" and, in certain contexts, "to distinctly designate/pronounce." In this legal context it most likely denotes a violating utterance — the deliberate, offensive pronunciation of the divine name YHWH in the context of cursing. Tellingly, the text then avoids writing YHWH, substituting הַשֵּׁם (HaShem, "the Name") — modelling in its very grammar the reverence it commands. The F.O.G renders "pierced" to preserve naqav's visceral force; the F.O.G Message uses "blasphemed" for immediate clarity.
