בַּעַל (ba'al) — a famously ambiguous word meaning "husband," "owner," or "lord/master/chief." The verse לֹא יִטַּמָּא בַּעַל בְּעַמָּיו is vigorously debated: does it mean a priest may not defile himself for a wife not listed among permitted kin (F.O.G — "husband"), or that a man of standing among the people must not defile himself beyond the permitted cases (F.O.G Message — "head-of-household")? Both readings are linguistically sound; F.O.G follows the plain lexical sense (ba'al = husband); F.O.G Message follows the contextual logic of Rashi and many medievals who read it as restricting a priestly leader's latitude.
