נֶפֶשׁ (nephesh) encompasses the throat, the breath of life, desire, appetite, and the whole living being—far richer than the English "soul," which imports later Greek notions of an immortal immaterial self. The F.O.G preserves "nephesh" in transliteration as a deliberate guard against that flattening. The F.O.G Message uses "soul" because the covenantal dimension—a living person's relationship with YHWH—is the primary weight here, and "soul" carries that register for a contemporary reader.
