אַחַת בַּשָּׁנָה (achat bashanah, "once a year") carries enormous theological freight: the annual repetition implies that sin's accumulation requires periodic resolution — a provisional, cyclical system. The book of Hebrews (9:12; 10:1–14) draws on this precisely, contrasting the yearly return with the Messianic high priest who entered the true sanctuary once for all (ἐφάπαξ, ephapax), achieving permanently what Yom Kippur could only annually approximate. The chapter closes with a narrative past tense — "and it was done" — possibly indicating it was recorded after the first enacted Day of Atonement.
