The Torah doubles both the niddah period and the purification period for a female birth without offering any explanation, resisting all later attempts to supply a rationale from the text itself. Note also the subtle shift in preposition: verse 4 uses בְּ (be-, "in") and verse 5 uses עַל (al, "upon") — both versions reflect this shift, though in English the distinction is slight. Ancient readers would likely have heard the difference; the precise reason remains undisclosed by the text.
