דָּרֹשׁ דָּרַשׁ (darosh darash) — an infinitive absolute reinforcing the finite verb: "he searched and searched," i.e., thoroughly and urgently investigated. The doubled construction signals Moses' thoroughness and agitation. שְׂעִיר הַחַטָּאת (se'ir hachattat) — "goat of the sin/purification offering." חַטָּאת serves double duty, meaning both the condition of sin and the offering that addresses it. Modern scholarship increasingly prefers "purification offering" since the offering functions primarily to purify the sanctuary from contamination; FOG adopts this rendering. FOG Message retains "sin offering" as the more familiar liturgical term.
