נָתַנּוּ יָד (natanu yad, 'gave/extended a hand') is a fixed idiom for submission and treaty-making — stretching out the hand to a foreign power in vassalage. The shame is multilayered: Israel now begs bread from the very powers that once enslaved or threatened her, inverting the Exodus narrative entirely. The F.O.G preserves the Hebrew place-names Mitzrayim and Ashshur; the F.O.G Message uses traditional English names whilst retaining the full weight of the humiliation.
