הֲשִׁיבֵנוּ (hashivenu, 'cause us to return/restore us') and וְנָשׁוּב (venashuv, 'and we will return') share the root שׁוּב (shuv) — the theological heartword of teshuvah, repentance and return. The grammar encodes a profound theological reality: genuine return to God is only possible because He first initiates the turning. This verse is liturgically repeated in synagogue readings of Lamentations after verse 22, so the scroll does not close on desolation. The F.O.G renders it 'Restore/return'; the F.O.G Message uses 'Turn us back/we will return' to make the teshuvah-logic explicit.
