שָׂרִים בְּיָדָם נִתְלוּ ('princes by their hands were hung') — the phrase most naturally reads as suspension or hanging by the wrists, a well-attested form of torture and humiliating execution in the ancient Near East. Some interpreters read בְּיָדָם as 'into their hand' (i.e., handed over to enemies), but the hanging interpretation is supported by the specific mention of hands as the point of suspension and by the broader context of public degradation throughout the verse.
