Ha-mesulla'im ba-paz — the verb salah means to be weighed or estimated in value, and paz denotes the most refined and purest grade of gold, distinct from ordinary zahav or ketem (see Psalm 19:10; Proverbs 8:19). The contrast with clay pottery — the most disposable, breakable of materials — is one of the sharpest reversals in the chapter. The potter and clay image carries intertextual weight: Jeremiah 18 uses it for YHWH's sovereign reshaping of nations, making the reversal here all the more pointed — what the Potter formed with care has been shattered.
