Tzadu (from tzud, "to hunt/trap") — the language of prey, not of war between equal combatants. The city's inhabitants are reduced to hunted animals in their own thoroughfares. The triple statement of finality — qarav qitzenu ("our end drew near"), male'u yameinu ("our days were full/complete"), ki va qitzenu ("for our end has come") — closes with each phrase like walls contracting, the compression of the language enacting the compression of the siege itself: there is nowhere left to run, and nothing more to say.
