Footnotes

*Hillulim* — a joyful, cultic harvest celebration, from the root *halal* (to praise, celebrate loudly). The same word appears in Lev 19:24 for the praise-offering of a vineyard's fourth-year fruit. The harvest feast here is a religious event held in the temple of Baal-Berith, merging agricultural abundance, pagan worship, and political conspiracy into one scandalous scene. The men of Shechem celebrate the vine's gift — the very vine whose wisdom they have ignored (v. 13) — and use it to fuel treachery.
