"Avimelekh" — אֲבִימֶלֶךְ — means "my father is king." This name is a theological thunderclap: Gideon publicly refuses the kingship (v. 23) but privately names a son "my father is king." Whether deliberate irony or unconscious self-disclosure, the name exposes the chasm between Gideon's words and his self-understanding. The son of a Shechemite concubine — half-Canaanite by birth — will seize the kingship Gideon claimed to refuse, becoming the book's dark anti-king in chapter 9. FOG preserves "Avimelekh"; FOG Message uses the traditional "Abimelech."
