"Son of a king" — בְּנֵי הַמֶּלֶךְ (*b'nei ha-melech*). The kings unknowingly testify to the royal bearing of the men they murdered — who were, as Gideon reveals in v. 19, his own brothers. The phrase casts a long shadow over the kingship question dominating this chapter (vv. 22–23): Gideon's brothers looked like royalty; will Gideon himself become what they appeared to be? The irony deepens with the naming of Abimelech in v. 31. FOG and FOG Message both preserve the phrase intact.
