Notably, the divine figure is here called 'Messenger of *Elohim*' rather than 'Messenger of YHWH' as in vv.11-12—a shift both translations reflect faithfully. Whatever its literary explanation, the instruction transforms Gid'on's hospitality meal into something resembling an altar sacrifice: food laid on a rock, liquid poured over it. The scene is transitioning from guest-and-host to worshipper-and-deity, even before the fire falls.
