Footnotes

The verb translated "gleaned" in some versions (לָקַט, *laqat*) is a harvest term—one picks gleanings from a field after the main reaping is done. The narrator's use of this agricultural image turns the battlefield into a field of harvest, with the men of Binyamin as grain being gathered after the main cut. Given the cyclical agricultural framework of the Judges narrative, the image is grimly ironic. FOG and FOG Message both render *laqat* as "cut down" or "picked off" to preserve the military register; this footnote draws out the latent harvest metaphor.
