The Hebrew מַעֲרֵה גִבְעָה (*ma'areh Gibeah*) is textually difficult. The LXX and several manuscripts offer variant readings; some render it as a directional reference ("west of Gibeah"), others as a meadow or cleared area. The term may derive from עָרָה (*'arah*, "to lay bare"), suggesting open or stripped ground. FOG renders it as "open ground" to preserve the spatial ambiguity without committing to a specific topographic identification; FOG Message follows the textual tradition that reads a westward position.
