נְבָלָה (*nevalah*) — a "disgraceful, outrageous act" — denotes a violation that shames not merely the individual but tears the communal fabric. It appears after Dinah's rape (Gen. 34:7), after Tamar's (2 Sam. 13:12), and in Deuteronomy's warnings about sexual violence (Deut. 22:21), always marking a civilisational rupture. The old man uses it to describe the threatened assault on the Levite male; the text will shortly enact it — vastly more brutally — against the unnamed woman. FOG renders it "disgraceful thing"; FOG Message uses "outrage" to convey its social and moral explosion.
