The name דְּלִילָה (*Delilah*) likely derives from the root דָּלַל (*dalal*), meaning 'to weaken' or 'to hang low' — an ironic naming for the woman who will unstring Israel's strongest man. The Valley of Sorek was border territory between Israel and Philistia; the text never identifies Delilah as Philistine, leaving her ethnic loyalty deliberately ambiguous and her betrayal all the more intimate. Both translations retain her name, as it requires no rendering.
