בְּעָרֵי גִלְעָד (*b'arei Gil'ad*) — 'in the cities of Gilead.' The plural is unusual for a burial notice, which typically names a single city (cf. vv. 10, 12, 15). The LXX reads 'in his city, in Gilead,' suggesting a Hebrew Vorlage closer to *b'iro* ('in his city'). The ambiguity may reflect lost knowledge of Jephthah's precise hometown — fitting, perhaps, for a man who was himself an outsider and outcast (Judg. 11:1–3). FOG retains the Hebrew plural literally; FOG Message smooths it with 'one of the cities,' acknowledging the textual oddity without emending.
