The phrase וְהִיא לֹא-יָדְעָה אִישׁ (*vehi lo yad'ah ish* — 'she had not known a man') underscores the tragedy: she died as she had lived — unmarried, her lineage unborn. The narrator records that it became a חֹק (*choq* — a fixed ordinance or statute) in Israel, a remarkable detail: this anonymous young woman's death is institutionalised into national memory. The text does not justify the vow; it lets the tragedy stand in silence. And it is the daughters of Israel — not the men — who carry her memory forward.
