ἁρπάζοντες ("snatching") denotes sudden, urgent seizure — there is no time for deliberation. χιτῶνα ("inner tunic/undergarment") is the garment worn closest to the skin; the image of one "stained by the flesh" (ἐσπιλωμένον) almost certainly echoes Zechariah 3:3–4, where Joshua the high priest stands before the divine court in filthy garments — a picture of defilement requiring divine action to remove. The instruction to show mercy "with fear" holds pastoral compassion in creative tension with the recognition that sin, like contagion, can spread to the rescuer.
